    Krispy Kreme Challenge 2009

img_1636.jpg The Krispy Kreme Challenge is an annual, student-operated race in Raleigh, North Carolina benefiting the NC Children’s Hospital. The basic idea is you run from the NC State Belltower to the local Krispy Kreme and back a little over four miles – oh – and you try to eat a dozen doughnuts at the turn.

I love Krispy Kreme doughnuts and being from Winston-Salem I was raised on them, sugar cake, and Moravian Cookies – wonder why I am not a little guy all you want – I think I have an idea. That being said doughnut #5 was my stopping point.

The winning time was 29:50 and that guy ate a full dozen – that’s right he averaged around a seven and a half minute mile not including the doughnuts. Odds are he was done with the race before I started running back to the Belltower.

This is one of the most fun races I’ve run because no one is really taking it serious. I put this race in the category of the Skirt Chaser 5k where the focus is on the fun and spectacle of the race as much as it is the run itself. To answer the tough questions – yes – I both saw people puke and saw where people puked. No – it was far less than I would have thought. Yes – you could do it – a lot of people weren’t running and I’d guess most didn’t eat the full dozen.
