    Space Shuttle Enterprise in Space?

img00549-20110909-1312-ef58ce3a64d2b954c47f482f91e7992061e0478c At first glance this might seem like a harmless toy that could teach a child about the good ol days when we used to send people into space. Remember way back then? But in all honesty this is just another bastardization of history not unlike the Playmobil set that has the cowboys playing nicely with the Indians. (Watch those blankets Wancheese!)

The Space Shuttle Enterprise (NASA Orbiter Vehicle Designation: OV-101) was the first Space Shuttle orbiter. It was built for NASA as part of the Space Shuttle program to perform test flights in the atmosphere.[2] It was constructed without engines or a functional heat shield, and was therefore not capable of spaceflight.

My guess is the name Enterprise was attractive because of that other ship named Enterprise and had nothing to do with the history of the actual ship or the missions it never flew.  Random trivia question – I’ll find a prize somewhere.  Where is the Space Shuttle Enterprise now? Where is it going next? First person to answer correctly in the comments section wins.

Thanks to BobG for the find and Toys R Us for ruining a childhood with this toy. One more pic after the jump – of Enterprise launching??? (EDIT: I thought he was headed to Toys R Us.)

    BobG Says:

NOT at Toys R Us… these are two separate models… and I didnt see a price listed but I’m guessing they’re pricy! They also had Challenger, still in plastic wrap and unopened box. Hmmm….. wonder if it comes with good O-rings?
