Wait – did you say was? Don’t get me wrong – I would hug a wookie but the latest controversy over what’s being added to soon to be released Blu-ray edition of Star Wars has me concerned. More CGI? Yoda is being replaced with a cartoon? New dialog for Darth Vader? Obi-Wan says what? New eyes for ewoks? and worst of all? Greedo still shooting first.
Don’t think any of this means I won’t watch it. I mean… it is still Star Wars. I just miss the feel that came with a movie that had a real set. Like the one the right and the pictures linked here.
I think I have a certain attraction to these pictures because it looks like it would be an awesome parade float. Or maybe a certain float building team could have made a cool Star Wars set. Either way both aren’t happening because of CGI and that is terrible.
BTW this post is the first using ifttt.com (If This Then That) which should echo this post to the new NOSVC Tumblr account. Why? Why not. I’m not sure if I really need a Tumblr account in addition to the blog but like a lot of things I am going to test it out and try it anyway. We’ll see how ifttt and Tumblr work and report back soon.
Earlier this month the Wake County Parking deck (one day to become the L Building) got a colorful new addition – The Fantastic Sky Race. If you are like me you heard art installation, saw it was cool and took a couple of pictures of it and didn’t think much of it. I had heard in passing that the project had something to do with the Wake County Library so I assumed all the images were from random children’s books of which I was not familiar. Not till we parked under the last panel with the title of the piece did I realize that perhaps this had more of an original and local angle than I thought.
So I did a little web surfing and learned that this was not images from random children’s books but art from three NCSU design students. I also found a photo set on Flickr of the images used for the panels. On closer inspection I found the NCSU bell tower, a zeppelin with an acorn and a flying statue of Sir Walter Raleigh. There is probably more I missed but the images on Flickr are definitely worth looking at closely. There may even be a Star Wars reference – is that Cloud City on the next to last panel?
Enjoy the largest and perhaps coolest art installation in Raleigh while it lasts and hit the Flickr set for a few details that are hard to catch as you drive by.

Pretty cool Flea Market find – probably the best one since BobG found the Samsonite Lego bricks. Unfortunately the record is warped so I’ll never really know The Story of Star Wars. Then again I don’t own a record player so that might make life a little difficult as well.
This was bought to display so I don’t think it matters the question is – which side to show. Answer the poll below and let me know what you think.
Grwaaawaar!!!
This is a video of Harrison Ford on the Jimmy Kimmel Show. That is a little fluffy Chewbacca. Fluffy just like this post – how awesome is that?
Thanks to Chloe for letting me know about this one.
An autographed space shuttle model and a U.S. flag flown on the first and last shuttle missions will remain on the International Space Station (ISS) to serve as a monument to the end of NASA’s shuttle program and a goal for its successor.
“This flag represents not just a symbol of our national pride and honor, but in this particular case, it represents a goal,” Ferguson said. “This flag will be flown prominently here by the forward hatch of Node 2, to be returned to Earth once again by an astronaut that launches on a U.S. vehicle, hopefully in just a few years.”
What is the future of NASA?
Glad you asked – great answer here.
What is did the shuttle do for us anyway?
Another good question – another good answer.
Finally – where did my afternoon go?
Don’t click here.
And last but not least -
Does anyone buy this nonsense? (It almost fit into this post.)
Thanks to BobG for the links and don’t forget the shuttle lands this Thursday (7-21) at 5:57AM EDT at Kennedy Space Center in Florida. As always NASA-TV will be broadcasting and if you are at work that early you can watch it here.
