BobG (part-time contributor to NOSVC.com) was in Blacksburg, VA this past weekend for the annual Day of Remembrance honoring “the 32 people who lost their lives on April 16, 2007…”
BobG found this while he was up there and forwarded it to the site. There are large fiberglass Hokie Birds around the campus in Blacksburg (see another one with G and I from 2006 after the jump).
A little more research found – “This is one of 75 decorated fiberglass Hokie Bird statues created in 2006 to raise money for the Blacksburg Partnership. The statues were painted by local artists and the proceeds from their sales went towards economic development and tourism projects.” This one just happened to be covered in Lego Bricks – how cool is that?
I’d love to end this post on a somewhat sentimental note but somehow even the thought of that day and the tragedy is an emotional drain. Much credit to the alumni and community that come out to this event and keep the memories of those lost that day alive.
LEGOPalooza 2011 is going on this weekend at the Morehead Planetarium in Chapel Hill. It is sponsored by NCLUG (North Carolina Lego Users Group) and is a free event. They had a lot of interesting and unique displays and Lego compilations. I was particularly impressed with the two very large Star Wars dioramas of Endor and Hoth.
This was a nice event – some repeats from the previous Brick Magic event but that wasn’t terrible. The lights in the room were terrible. It was an unfortunate mix of poor lighting and not enough. The images didn’t come out as well as I would have liked and Cara got several of the better ones that were taken of the large pieces. Maybe this year’s Brick Magic will be better suited for taking pictures. (Put it on your calendar May 7-8, 2011.)

Series 3 of the Lego Minifigures are here but unfortunately are hiding on the back row. They include a hula dancer, tribal chief, samurai warrior, tennis player, sumo wrestler, baseball player, fisherman, elf, rapper, alien, guy in a gorilla suit, race car driver, mummy, snowboarder, space villain, and pilot. They’ll all get their close-ups soon.
Remember CL!CK? A year later and we’ve got another one. Very cool.
Here is a parting look at the Lego Christmas Village. I posted some pictures earlier this month on Facebook but never got around to posting them here. It was a busy month with a lot of posting with the advent calendar so now that things have slowed down a bit I decided to add the images to nosvc as well. The total size was around four feet wide and two feet deep. I used several sets and included a snowball fight and a Star Wars nativity scene in the project. More pictures after the jump and no – you can’t come and see it. Like the rest of the Christmas decorations in the house this one has gone back to its respective home till next December.
