This is a picture of Hurricane Irene taken by NASA from two days ago. After the earthquake yesterday this seems oddly peaceful. We are aware of it heading our way and we know what it is capable of doing. We can also prepare. A surprise ground shaking makes you appreciate being able to prepare.

This morning Irene became a Category 3 storm still headed in our direction. I wrote a post for Raleigh’s Creative District (aka southwestraleigh.com) on Tips to Prepare For Hurricane Season and linked a couple of resources for people to review and hopefully use to plan for a potential issue.  The storm track keeps looking more and more in our favor and unfortunately more and more like a direct hit on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. This like a lot of things is subject to change over the next two days but picking up a couple of cans of food and making sure you have some bottled water on hand won’t hurt you either way.

Should the storm hit I’ll be here posting and taking pictures till the power goes out and the batteries finally fail.

A little before 2PM EDT I got to experience my first earthquake. In the immediate aftermath we were debating what might have happened. Our building has had a reasonable number of loud noises and odd movements in the past couple of weeks and despite this being louder and more violent than others we’ve experienced it wasn’t too far away from what one might expect. Especially sitting in the conference room with its frequently loud HVAC system. We did evacuate as a safety precaution but that was as much to release nervous energy among the staff as it was anything else.

Bottom line – all is well – at least here at the office.  There is concern  that we may have experienced a Lego disaster at home but that will have to wait till 5.

So we’re back – for now.

Next stop – Hurricane Irene. From there expect swarms of locusts and if you want to know more you better grab a Bible because this thing is likely to get bad. Maybe those people from May were just off by a few months?

UPDATE: Map after the jump showing areas reporting feeling the earthquake on the East coast.

Despite a national unemployment rate of 9.2% some cities are moving forward showing job growth, family growth, population growth and attractiveness for settlement. On this list Raleigh, NC is #2.

Many of our top performers are not surprising. No. 1 Austin, Texas, and No. 2 Raleigh, N.C., have it all demographically: high rates of immigration and migration of educated workers and healthy increases in population and number of children. They are also economic superstars, with job-creation records among the best in the nation. [SOURCE]

I know there aren’t any points for second place but we are in the Top 10 and while Charlotte, NC is on the list we’re still 6 positions higher than they are at #8.

    Just sayin.

So in the middle of all that is going on here with encouraging people to call, email and generally harass BobG (have you called and/or emailed him today?) I updated nosvc.com and the other sites at Raleigh Web Design and the Governor’s Institute that are running WordPress to version 3.2.

What’s new in 3.2? So far a few things – probably more on the back end (PHP 5.2.4+ and MySQL 5 required) and admin page than you can see on the front end right now. The new themes are using HTML 5 and support for older browsers (most notably IE6) is done.  We suggest using Firefox or Chrome anyway so take that for what you will.

As always when there is an upgrade please let me know if you see problems on the site.  I would like to address them.  I also assume that since this is a “major” upgrade there will be subsequent upgrades to various plugins this site and others are using. Hopefully this means a better, faster, and more useful site for the people that stop by.  A more useful site for abstract uselessness?  Yes – we’re that awesome.
