I firmly believe that one of the past parts of living in Raleigh is the great museums we have in our backyard. I know – we have great restaurants, bars, shopping, college and professional sports teams and everything else you can imagine but we are particularly fortunate to have the state Art, Natural Science and History Museums so close. (I’ll even count whatever Exploris/Marbles is on that list.)
That being said with another day off for the holidays we decided to go see the George Washington exhibit at the Museum of History. After a short setback of forgetting the memory card for the camera we got to the “Discover the Real George Washington” exhibit. It was extremely impressive and I encourage you to go. They have gone to great lengths to recreate our first president both how he looked and how he lived. The life-size replicas of George Washington are likely the best representation of what he would have looked like using everything from dental records (his dentures to the right) to sculptures and paintings thought to best represent him. They also explore him as an individual who ran a plantation that made whiskey, had mixed feelings about slaves (while owning them) and didn’t want to create an American monarchy.
So enjoy the pictures after the jump but try to make a point to visit the NC Museum of History before this exhibit disappears on January 21st. It is extremely worthwhile and oddly relevant to today’s political landscape. I don’t know if our first president would be terribly impressed with the current state of our country. He might be a little upset with how we the people have become too polarized in our two-party system. He would however be extremely impressed with the advances in dental technology.
So in our continuing efforts to be relevant I always like it when we find something before someone else. I know – it rarely happens and honestly it may have something to do with this blog not being a news source – unless you like YouTube videos or stories about porcelain cats or the St. Patrick’s Day Parade and call that news.
Either way – we brought you the billboard ad campaign “Save the Date” in our We Three Kings of Orient Are… post on December 16th*. Here is the latest update in the world ends on May 21, 2011 saga by this site’s favorite N&O author Josh Shaffer.
Again to the people supporting this campaign – on behalf of the NOSVC.com team we’d love to get a shot at anything you don’t think you’ll need next May 22nd. Which based on what I’ve read sounds like everything you own. So how about this – go ahead and sign everything in your possession to me – including the car with all the snazzy writing on it and date it May 22nd, 2011. I promise not to try to collect before May 21st and you promise not to ask for it all back on the 23rd. If you are right I get maybe 15 minutes to try and distribute your crap and win entrance to that great parade to heaven. If I am right – well – expect renovations to the site with the extra money I get after I pull that sticker off your car and sell it.
It sounds fair to me.

…probably confused as to why they keep getting pulled into billboard campaigns like these.

More information? Here for the American Atheists billboard. Here for the Save the Date/WeCanKnow.com campaign. Here for wiki info on the Biblical Magi/Kings/Wisemen. And after the jump – awesome We Three Kings video from Guitar Hero, the lyrics to We Three Kings (Traditional) and as always your thoughts. Do either of these campaigns offend? Are either appropriate for Christmas?
Personally – I wish Christmas would be left for celebrating and spending time with the people you like regardless of what they believe. Also – Save the Date folks – if you have anything cool you would like to donate to NOSVC on say May 20th – feel free. I am assuming you won’t need it. So land, cash, video games, Lego sets – not at all picky. Just don’t come looking for on the 22nd with a new date. It doesn’t work that way.
So we’re watching a former Governor somewhat admit that he did something illegal but isn’t guilty, North Korea acting like a kid that needs attention, the TSA wanting to see your junk and eight years of being married. Imagine that – we beat the 7 year itch.
I guess all that other stuff is largely irrelevant.
My opinion on all of this? Easley took a pass – the Alford Plea is weak. You did it – you should have manned up and said guilty. This will likely have lasting repercussions on NC politics. North Korea concerns me a bit. Seems like we fought this one before. Can we please not go back. TSA – pay attention – you’re going to need a bigger scanner. Enough said.
Eight years – no kidding – I am a lucky guy. Happy Anniversary to the one person on the planet willing to put up with me.
As they say – early and often. Mid-term elections tend to be less exciting but no less important than the elections tied to a Presidential race. Since tomorrow is election day I thought I would post this cool site for anyone that has waited (like I have). To vote the good old fashioned way – at the polls and on the day of the election. The site basically takes your opinions on 12 popular issues, has you rank their importance and gives you the candidates most similar to you based on your “beliefs”.

After the jump I included a screen shot of my matches based on my answers. It wasn’t exactly what I expected.
