So I wasn’t sent a Nexus One to review so it may not be a surprise that I did not get sent an Apple iPad. I know – I went to the mailbox in the snow to check again today and either stuff is still getting sent to the old address or I am once again being denied the privilege of giving you a really good first hand review.
The best I could do is embed the video to the right of Pee-wee Herman getting a crack at the device and give you my thoughts based on what I’ve read. In a nutshell the biggest oversight is the inability to multi-task. From what I am reading you can’t listen to music and read a book at the same time not to mention use any one of the other “apps” like games or maps. (This may or may not be technically correct since I DIDN’T GET SENT ONE TO REVIEW.)
Other reviews also point out that there is no camera, no USB port, more exclusive AT&T deals, no flash in the browser (nope – you couldn’t watch the video to the right on the iPad), its screen is LED vs. OLED (OLED is brighter and more efficient), and it has a starting price tag of $500 (I’ve read as high as $725).
I know this is being touted as the replacement for the netbook but at this point I don’t think so. Do I want one? Ummmm… probably not. Not saying it isn’t a good product and not saying if something as simple as the multitasking was fixed I wouldn’t reconsider but right now? I don’t think it is worth it. I wish it was because to their credit Apple makes some awesome looking devices. In my very limited experience with the iPhone/iPod Touch the system is pretty solid and things work like you expect them to. On the upside maybe this new offering will make the iPod Touch drop in price enough to make me reconsider it.
