[singlepic id=7291 w=320 h=240 float=right]The premise sounds simple - run from the belltower at NC State to the Krispy Kreme eat a dozen doughnuts and return in under an hour. Approximate distance 5 miles give or take. This isn't the first time we're been to or participated in the challenge and while it is much harder than it sounds - it is likely the most fun race in Raleigh. Congrats to Mark, EdG, Eileen/iLean, BobG 11.75, Zach, Nick, Lisa, Bentley, the rest of the DC crew and anyone else I may have missed that we saw. Special congrats to those runners ...
The Rembrandt in America exhibit at the NC Museum of Art uses the slogan "You know the name. Now find out why." And much in the same way that I had heard of Genghis Khan I could have told you very little about our other museum guest in the city. Namely he may have been French (not true) and he didn't have a Ninja Turtle named after him (this one is true). Rembrandt in America is the largest collection of Rembrandt paintings ever presented in an American exhibition and the first major exhibition to explore in depth the collecting history of ...
[singlepic id=7209 w=320 h=240 float=right]The name Genghis Khan is probably a familiar one even if you don't know who he was exactly. Before going to the exhibit at the NC Museum of Natural Science I had a very vague idea of who Genghis Khan was and something of a concept of who he was historically but knew very little about the role he played in history. Genghis Khan is famous as the ruthless Mongol warlord who conquered half the known world. Under his rule, the Mongol Empire grew to be four times the size of the Roman Empire at its largest ...

When BobG sent me this I thought it was a scam or at best a Starbuck’s promotion that was meant to look viral. I read the article, and the original website and even did a web search before I decided it was legit and that I should post it. The bottom line here is you can use the image to the right to attempt to purchase coffee at Starbucks.
Hi! I’m Jonathan Stark. You can download this picture of my Starbucks card to your phone and buy coffee at Starbucks with it. Seriously. My card gets charged, you don’t. Details are here.
You can also add to the card if you are so inclined and keep an eye on the balance by following @jonathanscard on Twitter.
I am pretty impressed with the Twitter feed and really like the concept. Having a good day? Add $5 to the card and give a random stranger a good day too. Having a bad day – have a cup of coffee from someone that feels a little more fortunate. At least conceptually it seems like a good idea.
The twitter feed is pretty impressive too – “I wrote a bot that scrapes the Starbucks site for the card balance and posts it whenever the amount changes so you can tell if there’s any money available before heading to your local S’bux.”
If you happen to use the image to get a cup of coffee report back and let me know how it worked for you. Or if you happen to feel generous and add to the card let me know about that as well. Pretty interested to see how long this sustains itself.
I’ve got to thank Nick for this one. I thought I had seen everything on YouTube but obviously I had missed this one or someone else showed it to me and I had successfully blocked it out. Great – time to go back to regression therapy. Wonder if I can bill that to Nick’s account?
Yes – we watched this and many other YouTube classics on Dobbins fancy TV (here, here and here).
No – I didn’t hide your remote control. (Maybe ask Nick?)
No – calling and texting late at night won’t always get you a response.
Yes – I did tape everything I could find to your wall.
No – I didn’t put Jimmy in the attic.
Yes – I did put Jimmy in the microwave.
This is the third year we’ve gone to the infamous Beer, Bourbon and BBQ festival held at the beautiful Koka Booth Amphitheatre in Cary [2009] [2010]. The second year we’ve gotten a safe ride from Darrell. The first year we’ve gone to the Friday night event. And the first year we created awesome fun things like the merry-go-round (duck, duck, goose), taking the hill (Teddy Roosevelt) and “stage-laxing” (final copyrighted name pending). We could have gotten around to something useful but we had to stand in line for BBQ for a least an hour. (Time well spent in retrospect.) Otherwise as I’ve said before – the event is everything you would expect when you combine fun people with sample of beer, bourbon and a nice plate of BBQ.
As always hit the jump for more photos including the new phenomenon that BobG started of laying on stage with a band. If you have a better name for this than “stage-laxing” post it in the comments.
The fuel and oxygen tanks in the Atlas V and Centaur upper stage are being loaded with propellants this morning as the countdown for the launch of the Juno spacecraft to Jupiter proceeds on pace for a 11:34 a.m. EDT liftoff. The Atlas V first stage operates on high-grade kerosene and liquid oxygen, while the Centaur uses liquid hydrogen for fuel along with liquid oxygen to power its engine. There are no technical issues and the weather forecast calls for a 70 percent chance of acceptable conditions.
It is a little under an hour until launch. I know this isn’t a manned vehicle but it is still pretty exciting. You can watch it live on NASA TV or here on NOSVC’s stream of NASA TV (Our stream looks a little better so far).

Because the world knows Lego and NASA are like peanut butter and chocolate (good by themselves but better together) the three minifigs above are headed to Jupiter aboard Juno which is launching tomorrow. Like a lot of the recent sets that have gone to space I am looking forward to seeing them in a Lego store near me soon. Are you paying attention Lego?
The figures, milled from aluminum, will accompany Juno on its five-year trip to Jupiter. When Juno arrives in 2016, the Lego likeness of the Roman god, Jupiter, his sister, Juno, and the Italian astronomer, Galileo, will be there to take in all the sights and bask in the immensity of the largest planet.
The brick company even underwrote the project, at a cost of $5,000 for each of the minifigs, which will soon become the farthest flying toys ever. The manufacture of the figures was a deliberate process to ensure the figures would not interfere with NASA’s sensitive measurements.
At $5k per I doubt these will actually be in the stores but a nice plastic replica would be awesome. Juno launches tomorrow (August 5th) at 11:34 a.m. EDT.
