[singlepic id=7291 w=320 h=240 float=right]The premise sounds simple - run from the belltower at NC State to the Krispy Kreme eat a dozen doughnuts and return in under an hour. Approximate distance 5 miles give or take. This isn't the first time we're been to or participated in the challenge and while it is much harder than it sounds - it is likely the most fun race in Raleigh. Congrats to Mark, EdG, Eileen/iLean, BobG 11.75, Zach, Nick, Lisa, Bentley, the rest of the DC crew and anyone else I may have missed that we saw. Special congrats to those runners ...
The Rembrandt in America exhibit at the NC Museum of Art uses the slogan "You know the name. Now find out why." And much in the same way that I had heard of Genghis Khan I could have told you very little about our other museum guest in the city. Namely he may have been French (not true) and he didn't have a Ninja Turtle named after him (this one is true). Rembrandt in America is the largest collection of Rembrandt paintings ever presented in an American exhibition and the first major exhibition to explore in depth the collecting history of ...
[singlepic id=7209 w=320 h=240 float=right]The name Genghis Khan is probably a familiar one even if you don't know who he was exactly. Before going to the exhibit at the NC Museum of Natural Science I had a very vague idea of who Genghis Khan was and something of a concept of who he was historically but knew very little about the role he played in history. Genghis Khan is famous as the ruthless Mongol warlord who conquered half the known world. Under his rule, the Mongol Empire grew to be four times the size of the Roman Empire at its largest ...

At the NHL All-Star Fan Fair the product vendors were in full effect. Besides a lot of hockey gear they had video games and this – umi Telepresence by Cisco. We got a “live” demo where we sat in two rooms that looked they could be a living room and played a game where we tried to guess the name of hockey teams by only seeing their logo. (As you can see in the picture they split us up.)
Game aside the technology was interesting if not a little ahead of its time. Sure it was neat to see each other but I don’t know if the utility is that much greater than Skype or any of the other video capable messaging systems out there. It did run on the big screen and was in HD but is all that really necessary? How much of the other person do you really need to see in a phone call? My guess is this will be useful for really long distance calls and sell better if the cost to travel becomes outrageously expensive.
It was fun to play with but I don’t really expect to see one of these in my house anytime soon. And with a prediction like that I’ll probably have two before Christmas.
Note: The product’s name actually has a little line over the u in umi. For some reason I can enter than character but it doesn’t work when I try to publish the post. So if you see this product with a little line over the u that is it. I am assuming it should be pronounced “you-me” which shouldn’t really need the line to pull of but much like Motely Crue and Lowenbrau it just looks cool.
So I heard about this new size at Starbucks the 31oz Trenta and immediately thought what a great idea. Then I remembered even with the amount of coffee I like to drink anything over a medium there makes me shake and gives me really bad caffeine withdrawal – sometimes a headache.
Then I saw where it was being released first – (Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Hawaii, Nevada and Arizona) and thought is it just me or are most of those states south of the Mason Dixon line?
That brought me to only one logical conclusion. In “Starbuckese” (which I refuse to speak even in their store – they know what I mean when I say medium) the word Trenta must mean Bubba-sized or Redneck-big.
Figure it this way a Venti Pumpkin Spice Latte (Whole Milk / Whipped Cream) at 20oz is 510 Calories 20g of Fat. Increase that proportionally to the new Trenta size and you get approximately 760 Calories and 30g of Fat. Not saying it isn’t a good way to die but is Starbucks really trying to kill us here in the South? Check the video to the right to gain some perspective on how large the cup is – a bottle of wine has less liquid. Maybe the Krispy Kreme Challenge should make a detour past Starbucks – as long as you are going out may as well go all the way out. And while you are at it – quit wondering why we are fat in the south.
I can’t decide if it is worse that they have the President of the United States shilling for KFC -or- if the fact that KFC is selling fish is worse. Might be a coin toss. (Kentucky Fried Carp? Cod? Catfish? It could work. Maybe.)
This is a great commercial from Hong Kong and either they really like and admire President Obama or is unbelievably stereotypical in an almost racist fashion.
Who knows? Either way – the sandwich looks pretty good. Wonder if it comes to the US if they will make it a Double Down?
Yes – I know that is not really President Obama but does that really change anything?
I finally got around to downloading the ‘official’ Stanley Cup photos. These came out pretty good. Glad I found the little cards that had the codes on them.
So this is pretty much me around the house all the time. Maybe I need to get a Volkswagon or trade my Vader helmet for something a little more rustic – maybe a little Viking?
Anyway – great commercial.
