This comes from the “did you know” file and is actually pretty interesting…
Thursday is National Coffee Day, and the drink actually has a connection to Raleigh you might not know.
You’ve probably heard coffee referred to as a “Cup of Joe.” The origin of that term dates back to the early part of the 20th century and one of the dominant figures in Raleigh history.
Josephus Daniels, the publisher of The News & Observer, was appointed Secretary of the Navy by President Woodrow Wilson in 1913.
Daniels did not drink alcohol – and did not believe sailors should, either. In 1914, he issued General Order 99, which prohibited alcohol on all Navy property. That eliminated the officer’s wine mess and meant the strongest drink on board a ship was coffee.
You can bet that didn’t go over particularly well with hardened Navy vets, and thus the derisive term, “Cup of Joe.”
Among Daniel’s other reforms were inaugurating the practice of making 100 Sailors from the Fleet eligible for entrance into the Naval Academy and the introduction of women into the service.
Now, more than 400 billion cups of coffee are consumed each year. To celebrate National Coffee Day, some area businesses are offering deals.
You can get free coffee at Krispy Kreme all day long. And Kangaroo Express has hidden 29 Roo mugs around Raleigh – if you find one, your first cup of coffee is free.
Shouldn’t we be out having a cup rather than sitting here? Josephus Daniels, no doubt, would be pleased. [SOURCE]
Josephus Daniels – among other things was also connected to the “world’s smallest naval base” – which despite having less notoriety than the phrase “Cup of Joe” is in some ways a lot cooler.
UPDATE: Very cool find by Travis -
WLAC’s first broadcast was on Oct. 16, 1922. Guest speaker for the evening was Josephus Daniels, former secretary of the U.S. Navy and owner of the Raleigh News & Observer. Daniels made the ironic prediction: “Nobody now fears that a Japanese fleet could deal an unexpected blow on our Pacific possessions…radio makes surprises impossible.” [SOURCE]
Not coffee related but Josephus Daniels history.
Our post on Caffeinated Wild Turkey American Honey BBQ Sauce is #5 on Topless Robot’s 8 Fantastic Delivery Methods for Caffeine -
How can you not like this from the title alone? Mind you, unlike the other items on this list, it is not a product you can buy, but a recipe you can make, so it requires some effort. Therefore, if you feel too lazy to make this, take one of the other items on this list and find the energy. I mean, you’ve got pretty much the three basic American food groups here – caffeine, barbecue and booze. You’re going to get buzzed, drunk and fat IN ONE CONVENIENT SUBSTANCE! You can’t really get much better than this unless you dropped a hamburger in a giant mug of beer and chugged it while inhaling ground French roast.
This is a recipe I created prior to a cookout at Nick’s house – completely on the fly. How cool is that? The added bonus? The sauce is actually pretty good and I kept notes while I was making it so I could make it again.
Thanks Topless Robot for stopping by and sharing a little NOSVC with your readers. If you follow the recipe and make the sauce let me know how it goes.
When BobG sent me this I thought it was a scam or at best a Starbuck’s promotion that was meant to look viral. I read the article, and the original website and even did a web search before I decided it was legit and that I should post it. The bottom line here is you can use the image to the right to attempt to purchase coffee at Starbucks.
Hi! I’m Jonathan Stark. You can download this picture of my Starbucks card to your phone and buy coffee at Starbucks with it. Seriously. My card gets charged, you don’t. Details are here.
You can also add to the card if you are so inclined and keep an eye on the balance by following @jonathanscard on Twitter.
I am pretty impressed with the Twitter feed and really like the concept. Having a good day? Add $5 to the card and give a random stranger a good day too. Having a bad day – have a cup of coffee from someone that feels a little more fortunate. At least conceptually it seems like a good idea.
The twitter feed is pretty impressive too – “I wrote a bot that scrapes the Starbucks site for the card balance and posts it whenever the amount changes so you can tell if there’s any money available before heading to your local S’bux.”
If you happen to use the image to get a cup of coffee report back and let me know how it worked for you. Or if you happen to feel generous and add to the card let me know about that as well. Pretty interested to see how long this sustains itself.
So the Independence Day Holiday is a time for celebrating the great freedoms in the United States of America that have been fought for and defended for generations. We live in the greatest country on the planet and as far as we know the universe. This time of celebration has people opening their homes and their grills to family and friends and a good time is had by all. Where is this post going? Oh yeah – my latest BBQ Sauce creation – Caffeinated Wild Turkey American Honey BBQ Sauce.
I made this last night for Nick’s cookout and enough people liked it that I decided to do something I rarely do – I am publishing the recipe. I actually remembered to write it down while I was making it so why not? The finished product is a sweet spicy sauce that should be good on just about any meat. (No shed jokes please.)
You’ll need – 2 cups brown sugar, 1 cup coffee, 1 cup Wild Turkey American Honey, 1 1/2 cups apple cider vinegar to start the base. Mix these items in a large sauce pan and stir till combined over medium heat. Add 1 tablespoon red pepper flakes (more if you like more heat or less if you are Canadian) and a sprinkle of onion powder, garlic powder and black pepper. Bring to a simmer and add 1/3 cup yellow mustard, a 12 ounce can of tomato paste, 5 drops liquid smoke and 1/2 teaspoon corn starch (thickens it up and makes it stick to your ribs – literally). From there whisk to combine and let simmer for 10-15 minutes. Add salt to taste.
Hope you have a great Fourth of July and an awesome cookout and just remember – if the sauce doesn’t work out for any reason you still have a lot of Wild Turkey that you can drink to save the cookout. Enjoy.
Take a reusable mug to Starbucks, Caribou Coffee or Nordstrom’s Coffee Bar and get a free cup of coffee.
So don’t forget your mug when you head out today cause free is free.
UPDATE: Courtesy BobG – add Whole Foods to the coffee list. A free tree from Lowe’s, a free baseball cap from the Disney store and more. Feel free to add free things you find in the comment area.
