Because the world knows Lego and NASA are like peanut butter and chocolate (good by themselves but better together) the three minifigs above are headed to Jupiter aboard Juno which is launching tomorrow. Like a lot of the recent sets that have gone to space I am looking forward to seeing them in a Lego store near me soon.  Are you paying attention Lego?

The figures, milled from aluminum, will accompany Juno on its five-year trip to Jupiter. When Juno arrives in 2016, the Lego likeness of the Roman god, Jupiter, his sister, Juno, and the Italian astronomer, Galileo, will be there to take in all the sights and bask in the immensity of the largest planet.

The brick company even underwrote the project, at a cost of $5,000 for each of the minifigs, which will soon become the farthest flying toys ever. The manufacture of the figures was a deliberate process to ensure the figures would not interfere with NASA’s sensitive measurements.

At $5k per I doubt these will actually be in the stores but a nice plastic replica would be awesome. Juno launches tomorrow (August 5th) at 11:34 a.m. EDT.

Thanks to BobG for the tip and Google for finally finding what he was talking about.

While we didn’t get a lot of answers here we did get a ton of traffic and more importantly the good folks at www.bricksetforum.com were quick to identify the unusually large bricks and even help place the bricks into a set.  Thanks to users Istokg and RJM for shining some light on the issue.

These are Lego Samsonite Jumbo bricks. Yes – that Samsonite. The best reference I can find (and backup here) says these were released in 1969 – probably this set. The set references the number of bricks as 6 blue, 12 red, 12 white which means based on what I have in front of me all pieces are here.

So mystery solved and a lot of history learned.  I knew of larger than standard size bricks named Duplo or Quatro and smaller bricks named Modulex but I never knew of Samsonite – either the bricks or the association between the two companies.

And before you ask – no I have no idea what the value of these bricks might be.  No one has them for sale on eBay or anywhere else that I can find. Technically they are still BobG’s – we sort of bought them together but I didn’t pay him for them on purpose. I figured if he had accidentally found the Holy Grail of Lego we were better off if I hadn’t bought them officially. While I am not a fan of selling any bricks he may not have the same problem. Now that we know what they are he can decide what he wants to do with them.

More pictures after the jump – these bricks may not fit with any of my existing bricks but they are a pretty cool piece of Lego history. If you run across an odd Lego piece and either want it identified let me know. I’ve found some pretty good resources and enjoy doing the research. If you decide to donate those to McLeod Lego Museum when you are done we’ll add your name to the contributor list.

So I am at a loss and Google isn’t helping. I am currently possess several larger (bigger than Duplo and I think Quatro) bricks that say Lego. The bricks were purchased by the infamous BobG at the flea market at the State Fairgrounds.

My question is are they real and if so where can I find more information on them?  The closest I have come so far is this image which gives me no real information but is the first image I’ve seen online of the mystery brick.

The Lego logo on the brick closely resembles the ones used from 1953-1955. (Look at the similarities between the O.) You can see it better on the close-up images after the jump.

So that is where I am now.  I need your help.  If you can confirm what these are I’d love to hear from you.  I am going to post the link to this post on message boards and email folks that may have an idea. If you need more or different pictures of the bricks let me know – they are sitting here on my desk and I would be more than happy to take a few more.

mn17 Decided to throw a few more ‘flashback’ photos up on the site and this time we landed in 2002 and Minneapolis, MN. I believe Cara was thereat a convention for Meredith College and I was along for the ride. She always gets the good trips while my job routinely sends me to Dorthea Dix (for meetings not to be strapped down and medicated – but I do wonder at times).

I digress. This trip was great because we were in the downtown area where all the buildings are connected on the second floor. While she was diligently attending seminars I was seeing how far I could go without going outside. We also got to go to a Minnesota Twins game (my first professional baseball game) and the infamous Mall of America where I went to my first Lego store and probably the largest outside of Orlando, FL. Other highlights included tryouts for the Vikings cheerleaders (disappointing) and multiple large Charlie Browns and Snoopys (Snoopies?) around town.

The pictures on this trip were taken with a film camera and the images were later scanned. Amazing what a decade of technology will do. More pictures after the jump and more memories yet to be posted as I go through the older files and look for hidden gems.

dsc_7439 Posting is down because I am having a busier than usual week both at work and at home. Go figure – when it rains it pours. This is one of the images Cara took on the second day of Brick Magic.

You may have seen me on ABC11, CW22, or TWC14 at the event courtesy our own BobG. Fortunately I caught it on CW22 because someone hasn’t sent me the clip yet. (Or the one from the Cooper Trial but I’m not keeping score or anything.)

I really like this image because the light gives it a very real feel. Click to enlarge and see the detail. Pretty good all things considered.
